Motatapu Speight’s Summit 47km High Country Mountain Bike
9th March 2013
The race starts at Glendhu Bay on the shore of Lake Wanaka, near the Wanaka township, and finishes at historic Arrowtown. Your journey follows a route early Maori used for hunting and gathering, and to move Pounamu (Greenstone). The valley was not discovered by European explorers until around 1862, during the gold rush.
This event takes you on an iconic off road course through the magnificent Motatapu, Soho and Glencoe Stations, which thanks to the owners, are opened once a year to the public for this event.
We have had top riders such as Anton Cooper, Marcus Roy, Kashi Leuchs, Sara MacDonald, Robyn Wong, adventure racers like Emily Miazga and Steve Gurney, and celebs such as Bill English and Hamish Carter all come and take part in the Motatapu Mountain Bike. However it is the first-timers, the recreational riders, and the competitors that just get up off the couch to come and take part that make up the main field. It still surprises us each year how many stories we hear back about how "I have never been on a mountain bike before and I have just bought one for your event!"
